Veterans Treatment Court (VTC)

What Is Veterans Treatment Court?

Veterans Treatment Court is a program for non-violent criminal offenders who have served in the US Armed Forces.

The Second Judicial Circuit Veterans Treatment Court (VTC) was established to offer eligible justice- involved veterans an alternative to the traditional criminal justice system by providing them support and rehabilitation through comprehensive substance use and/or mental health treatment, education, employment, vocational programs; and community resource referrals for housing, childcare, and transportation, all while being judicially monitored.

Veterans Treatment Court is a self-supporting program under the control and supervision of the VTC Team. VTC is made up of an extensive collabortation between the criminal justice system (judge, solicitor, public defender or defense lawyer) and dedicated partners, mentors, mental health specialists, addication specialists, including criminal justice, local, state and federal veterans agencies, and local community veterans organizations.

To apply, veterans need to submit an application to the VTC Coordinator's office. If accepted, an orientation appointment will be scheduled and a court date will be provided. At this time the program requirements are discussed and a participation contract is signed. Cases remain in VTC for no less than six (6) months for Magistrate level offenses and no less than fifteen (15) months for General Sessions level offenses.
